11 Months

I can't believe my baby is almost a year old. Totally incredible to me. It's amazing how much he's grown during the past year. I look back at pics of him as a newborn, then when he was a few months ago and he seems so tiny then. This past month has been a ton of fun. It seems he grows by leaps and bounds on a fairly regular basis. One day he's not pointing, the next he is. One day he doesn't seem to understand me, the next day he does. One day he's only interested in nursing. The next day, he's chowing down on chicken and rice and begging for more.

Things he likes:

  • Day care. He doesn't cry but actually smiles when he realizes where he's going (Keith says this usually occurs when they are going up the walk and Cole sees the building).
  • Electronic devices. These include but are not limited to: cordless phones, alarm clocks, remote controls, air purifiers. Mainly, things that light up and make noise when you press buttons. He also gets giddy when he hears the Blip of the television as it turns on.
  • Happy Baby Organic Puffs. He kicks his legs up and down when he spots anything related to them (the container they come in, the snack trap we sometimes store them in, etc.)
  • He likes being worn because it means he has a chance to do the things we do (i.e. press the button on the Keurig machine, close the freezer door, etc).
  • Doors. And I don't mean doors to cabinets. Those are old news. He just discovered that doors to rooms can be opened and closed and he's starting to figure out how that works. It's adorable to watch.
  • Nursing. He does it often when we are home together and he still nurses several (sometimes numerous, and sometimes too many to count) times a night. (As for me, with the biting, as of late, I could take it or leave it.)
  • The cats. He still loves the cats, but they are becoming better and better at avoiding him. Clem books it every time he raises his voice around her (which is often) and Kiwi retreats to higher locations so he can't get to her. The only time you'll catch them near him is when he is sleeping in bed with us. However, it is only a matter of time before he starts walking and climbing. Then there will be no where for them to hide.
  • The bongo. We have a bongo in our living room and I recently introduced it to Cole. He LOVED it. Pounding on it is his favorite past time.
  • Hitting things. He hits lots of things, and, for the most part, it seems like he's testing to see if the thing he is pounding will move so that he can know it's safe for him to lean on. Other times he pounds things just to touch them.
  • He's very much into pushing things.  That includes anything: his bumbo chair, the remote control, furniture like tables and chairs. If he discovers that he can move something then he moves it until his heart's content. (A few examples of this are in my post about our Berkshire road trip).
  • Balls. We have a few bouncy balls and he absolutely loves them. He and I play catch frequently with the $1.99 ball we got him at Rite Aid.
  • Things that spin. He actually has an O ball that spins. He used to love shaking this ball, but now he loves to watch it roll or spin.

Things he dislikes:

  • The high chair. Generally, though he hates being confined to ANYTHING (including my uterus - if you read my pregnancy blog you would've figured that out already). So when we get him in the high chair, the way we get him to stop screaming is by giving him a few of the aforementioned Organic Puffs.
  • He also dislikes the car seat, for the same reason he dislikes the high chair. Luckily, for us, once the car starts moving he usually stops crying. Only under certain conditions does he continue to cry.
  • Sleep. Every time we go near his room around bedtime, he starts to cry. Just mentioning the word "bedtime" brings whimpers. Sometimes, when he's in the car seat and the movement is lulling him to sleep he starts making The Noise. The sleep-fighting noise. It's a cross between a grunt and a whine.
  • The vacuum. We are so busy that we hired a house cleaner. She is really sweet and loves Cole. She also likes to make this clicking noise at Cole and she loves to see his cute face light up. Unfortunately, the last time she was here, she was vacuuming and the sound scared the crap out of Cole.  (Funny because when he was a newborn the sound of the vacuum is what used to calm him down during diaper changes). So he didn't give her much in the way of smiles. He clung to me even after she put the vacuum away.
  • Diaper changes. For some reason (hmm, I wonder where he gets this from) this baby cannot sit still, not even for two minutes. He wiggles and squirms and if we hold him down to make sure the poop doesn't go everywhere, he screams. It's a nightmare and for the last week or so, diaper changes have usually been a tag team effort.
  • Did I mention sleep? Specifically, he also hates naps. It's funny though. He won't (or will barely) nap when we need him to, but he'll sleep for a few hours when we don't need him to.

New Developments
  • This week he has graduated to using the tub without any help from the transitional inflatable tub. I decided it was finally time to make the change after witnessing him try to dive into the real tub from the inflatable.
  • The majority of his sleep time is spent in our bed. This began happening when he was sick with the flu. He was constantly waking up, and Keith and I needed to get rest too, so we brought him into bed with us. I was also worried about him sleeping alone with such a high fever. Now he has not been sleeping well on his own in the crib. So we've been bringing him into bed with us and we've all been sleeping better as a result. Part of me is embarrassed because I can hear all of the naysayers about co-sleeping, but you know what? This is our life and we are the ones who are living it, and I need to remember that. I listened to lots of what people told me to do over the past 10 months and mostly none of it worked, so I need to do what works for my family. And if letting him sleep in our bed helps us all sleep, then so be it.
  • His one-year birthday invitations went out this week. Keith had it made professionally and we actually saved a lot of money doing it that way. It's not going to be a big deal, just a party at our house with some good food, friends and family. We'll have the pool open by that point too, so if the weather is nice, bring your swim suits!
  • I might have mentioned this before, but he has a seventh tooth coming in on the bottom.
  • He has learned how to feed himself correctly using the spoon.
  • He points. At everything.
  • He claps now too!

To end this post, here are some of the highlights of the last month.

Here is Cole trying to pet Kiwi. It really is amazing he hasn't gotten scratched yet. I would say that Kiwi has amazing restraint. Either that or I've been running some pretty good interference.

Here is me consoling Cole.

He just loves the telephone.

It's like he's scaling a wall here.

Here he is eating the quinoa pilaf Keith made for him. It's taken him a while to get used to the texture, but he likes it now.

Here he is with quinoa on his mouth. How freaking cute does he look here?

Out in the yard with his Dino.

Mommy and Baby: Self-portrait

Here he is using the spoon. He does this a lot now because he knows it gets a laugh out of me.

We realized the trick with getting him to wear a hat is just to keep putting it back on his head and then distract him with something else so he forgets the hat is there.

The Berkshire Trip: Day 1

So we did it, we went on a mini-road trip to the Berkshires. And we had a glorious time. Before Cole got sick, we were planning on going south, not northeast, but after Cole got sick we were EXhausted. So we weren't planning on doing anything but chillaxin at home. Then we changed our minds, again. We decided we'd do an overnighter to the Berkshires and visit Mass MoCA, the coolest contemporary art museum ever (and we've seen a few: P.S. 1 in Queens, DIA in Beacon...). That way we'd get away, but we wouldn't be too far (the museum is only about 2.5 hours away) and we wouldn't be away for too long. Keith got a recommendation about a bed and breakfast called The Porches Inn in North Adams (where Mass MoCA is located).  So we called up on a whim Tuesday night and got a "suite" deal ($40 cheaper than their usual nightly rate since we were staying on a Thursday night) on a one-bedroom suite with a view of the museum. So on Thursday morning, away we went!

Of course, since we have a 10-month old it took us a lot longer to get there than the GPS said it would. Plus, we weren't in a huge rush. Part of the trip was the trip itself, so why not enjoy it? We stopped at the New Baltimore rest stop on the Thruway and fed Cole a banana in the Roy Rogers section of the rest stop. He was so enthralled with his seat (no confinement and tons of people to watch- what more could a baby want?) that we thought to ourselves, why are we even bothering going further than this rest stop? A rest stop is enough entertainment. But then we reminded ourselves that we needed some entertainment too, so we moved on.

Here is Day 1 in iPhone pics...

This is at the rest stop. Cole totally had a ball here.

After driving through some pretty (and some pretty depressed) towns, we finally made it to our destination.

This is part of the Katharina Grosse exhibit.

This is where Cole and I went as soon as we got to the room. He had fallen asleep in the short ride from the museum to the Porches Inn. So I cuddled him so he could get a nap in and we could have a normal dinner (read: NO BABY MELTDOWN).

Here is Day 1 with Keith's digital point-and-shoot.  And it's a good thing he had this camera, because we left our Digital Rebel (all packed and ready to go) at home. Warning: I am no good at editing my own photos, so don't be surprised if this post feels never ending.

This was part of the Sol Lewitt exhibit. There were three floors of his work. I liked the early work the best, but unfortunately, we didn't get to enjoy it as much since that is when Cole started to become Mr. Crankapotamus.

I don't think I posted about this ring sling. So I'll write about it now. I got this Zolowear ring sling from Waddle and Swaddle. I LOVE it. It's secure and doesn't fall down my shoulder like the Baby Balboa ring sling. And it's easier to adjust because it has a tail. Cole likes it too, mostly because he likes to be held on my hip.

A family portrait. Love the self-timer!

This was part of an exhibit about the digital age called "Memery." This piece was of the sunsets the artists found on Flickr.

A written version of Wikipedia. Very clever.

This is the early work of Sol Lewitt, and this is where Cole got cranky. It was at this point that we made our escape.

This kid has so much fun with this ball.

And as you can tell....

so does Daddy.

After putting Cole to sleep in the bedroom, Keith and I hung out in the dark drinking wine in the living room. This is me looking at Randalin's Instagram feed on my iPhone.

A nice way to end the night.

Flashback Friday: The Cape Cod Trips

Something that Keith and I have been doing since we started dating was take a trip to Cape Cod. I had gone there the summer before we started dating with some friends (Andreea and Linda) and wanted to go back to this cute little town I'd driven through called Truro. We've been staying in North Truro ever since. Truro is close to the tip of Cape Cod, just below Provincetown, which - if yo didn't know - is like the San Francisco of the northeast. We had such a great time that first year that we made an annual trek to Cape Cod every year following until we had Cole last year. What was neat was that in 2008, we started to include friends on these trips. We did this because we wanted others to enjoy the beauty and fun that is Cape Cod. And we also did it because we began camping there, and it's always more fun when you're camping with more than just your significant other. I don't have the pictures from 2002 on my computer because they are on film. And I am too lazy to search for them. However, I do have pictures from 2003 on. However, in 2008, I only downloaded a few photos to my computer (Keith probably has them all) so I only have a picture of Keith from that year. That's the year we went with Peter, Peg, Linda, Keener, and Beth.

What I did on my birthday

Today, 34 years ago, I was born. To celebrate this lovely occasion I decided to pamper myself at a Spa. You got that right, a SPA. I went to the Spa at Mohonk Mountain House and spent my birthday money on a massage and a pedicure, both of which I have not had since I was pregnant. (For those of you who don't know about Mohonk, it is an exclusive  - read: a getaway for the rich- mountain top resort on the beautiful Shawangunk Ridge.) The last pedicure I got actually was from my awesome mother-in-law while I was on bed rest. That was 2010. Before that I had gotten a pedicure right before our wedding. That was 2006. So it was high time I got another one. With the spa services, I also got access to the other amenities at the spa: outdoor mineral pool, sauna, and veranda with a view of the beautiful pitch pines. If it hadn't been raining, I would have gone for a hike around the lake, but when the weather forecasted to be rainy and cold, I decided to nix that and just enjoy my spa experience.  And I so did.

First was the massage. That was amazing. Of course, it did not go without me worrying my head off about my boobs. Should I run home and pump after this? Should I go straight to pick Cole up so he can nurse? Why didn't I bring my pump in my car? Will I lose my supply? Am I bad a mother for wanting some time to myself on my birthday? The list of questions were endless. Finally, another voice inside my head tried to put an end to it all, "Would you shut the hell up? One day of a massage and a pedicure are not going to kill your supply. One day of pampering yourself does not make you a bad mother! Now enjoy the damn foot massage because it's not going to happen again for quite some time!" Although the doubters persisted, their voices were lower and I was able to unfurl my brow, unclench my jaw and actually appreciate what I was feeling right then and there.

After the massage, I sat on the veranda and read my new book Fly Away Home by Jennifer Weiner, while drinking some weird but yummy elderberry juice and eating green grapes until my pedicure person came to "pick me up" for my next appointment. The pedicure was awesome. I was so into my book though that I nearly missed my massage. Finally, I stopped, put the book down and again tried to enjoy the goodness that is a foot massage in front of a beautiful mountain lake.

After the pedicure I read a bit more and then finally ventured outside to the "mineral bath," which is a fancy way of saying an in-ground hot tub. It was awesome. Even more awesome was the steam coming off the water and the raindrops hitting my face as I laid my head back against the stone terrace.  After my "bath" I took a shower, dried my hair, got dressed and drove back down the mountain to pick up Cole.

I felt refreshed and was so eager to see my baby. When I got there he was on the floor with Stacia who was trying to cheer him up. Apparently he had woken up a few minutes before in tears after a very short nap. As soon as I picked him up he became serene and settled his head against my shoulder. Dear readers, I could have stayed like that all day. It was that precious. However, his poopy diaper was calling out to be changed and we needed to be on our way. I had big plans to go to Panera and then Barnes and Noble, but when we got home to grab the diaper bag, he still seemed like he was in a sad mood, so I decided we'd spend the afternoon at home. I ate chicken soup I'd made Monday night and then we played in the living room until I realized he needed to go down for a nap or I'd be doomed. I got him down around 2:45 and knew he'd only be good for a half hour. I was ready to go to sleep in an instant, and started blogging to pass the time. True to form, at around 3:15, he woke up. I took him into bed, nursed him and we slept and snuggled until almost 5. We were kept company by Clem and Kiwi, who slept on either side of us. Keith made his usual on-his-way-home-from-work phone call and we decided spontaneously to try to go out for sushi for dinner. I say "try" because Cole's bed time is 6:30 and we knew we'd just be sitting down to eat at that point. So we were totally taking a gamble. He could have had a major meltdown. However, I was banking on the fact that that two-hour plus nap he took would hold him over.

And so, the verdict? It worked! It was an amazing dinner experience. The food was good, yes, but Cole really enjoyed himself. And that was what really mattered. The waitress took to Cole immediately. She was really sweet to him. And we made sure to include him in our dinner, so we fed him some of what we ate. We used chopsticks to feed him rice and chopped up Chicken Karaage). He loved the chicken (he loves his fried food just like mommy!) and he loved making friends with the people in the restaurant. I also had a nice time eating a cod dinner with a yummy Japanese beer and hanging with my wonderful hubby.

All in all, it was a perfect birthday.

Daily Cuteness: Napping

When he was sick Cole slept on daddy during his naps ( and sometimes at night). On Monday I came home to this. I grabbed my iPhone and took a few pics.

Spring Break

Spring Break starts tomorrow at 2:50 p.m. And already I'm up till 10 tonight. I bet my students are doing the same exact thing. We'll see how tired they are tomorrow.
Anyway, Keith and I have tons of plans and ideas for how we will spend the time together. I am off the entire week and Keith is off from Wednesday on. Next week is also my birthday. And I have a lot of plans for that day as well. I can't wait for it all to get started!

While he was sick...

an amazing thing happened: he took his first steps.
On Tuesday night while Keith tried to get him back to sleep (he went down at 6:45 and woke up at 7:30) Cole took a few steps from one section of his crib to another without holding on. When Keith told me, I was like "Why didn't you get me!!" And he was all, "Well,  I was trying to get him to go to sleep."
So the next night, Keith devised a plan to help Cole feel comfortable to walk on the floor (we think he does more in the crib because he knows if he falls he'll just bounce and boy does he love to bounce!) So we sat on the floor of the living room about two feet away from each other and faced one another. Keith encouraged Cole to first stand on his own, which he did. Then he said, "Go to mommy." And he did! He took two steps forward ON HIS OWN and fell into my arms. My heart leaped and I almost started to cry. What a beautiful thing, watching your child walk for the first time.

The Virus from Hell = The Flu

So the virus from hell seems to have faded away and it has left congestion in its wake. That makes for a snorting, snoring, Cole. But overall, he is doing much better and Keith, and I are thankful he is no longer suffering from a fever of 104.7. How scary is that? Very scary, let me tell you. He took many a trip to the bathtub this past week, thank you very much (although he wasn't thanking us, that's for sure.) Keith took Cole to the doctor this morning and the doctor thinks that even though Cole tested negative for both Flu A and Flu B on Sunday at the Emergency One in Kingston, that he probably had the flu. Apparently, the accuracy of the test goes out the window on the third day (which Sunday was for Cole's illness). It makes sense that it was the flu. Both Keith and I got the flu shot this year and Cole didn't. Plus, the high fever, the vomiting, the diarrhea, the lack of appetite. Not to mention the times when he couldn't even keep his head up he was so tired. Anyway, we're glad it's mostly over. I say mostly because he's still cranky and clingy like he is when he's not feeling well. (And the congestion is causing some minor complications with nursing, but with a little help from the Nosefrida, we should hopefully be able to get it under control.) I remember when I caught the flu a few years ago, I was still worn out for a few weeks afterwards. And I think it won't be much different for Cole. The flu really does a number on you. There's a reason there's a vaccination for it.

Baby sickness update

We are happy to report that Cole does not have the flu. It's only a standard issue respiratory illness, but one that was fully equipped with high fever, fever rash, and lots and lots of pointing (we are at THAT stage now).

Baby sickness

We think Cole has the flu, so I'll be out of the blogworld for another few days. Please send Cole healthy thoughts.
Grades are due Tuesday at noon, and I still have about 75 essays and 115 bookmark projects to grade. Such is the life of a teacher and mother.

Daily Cuteness: Naptime with daddy and Uncle Peter

On Sunday Keith and Cole went for lunch and a hike with Uncle Peter while I stayed home and did the dreaded grading. Peter took this photo of father and son with Keith's iPhone, and I ran it through Instagram's filter to get the old effect. I'm sure Keith and Peter are shaking their heads in disappointment at the use of a filter, but I think it's cool.
The trio went for a hike at the park near Kingston Point after lunching at Dulce. During their hike Keith said he noticed Cole was leaning over and thought he was just trying to see things from a different angle when he discovered that Cole was actually snoozing.

A nightmarish sleep - minus the sleep!

So I knew the minute I shared about Cole sleeping for longer periods of time that I would jinx us. I should've just kept it to myself. But nooooo, I HAD to go and tell the blog world about it.
Just an FYI: Saturday's post is the last time you will get anything positive from me in the sleep department. From now on I'll just complain.
So about last night. Last night was the kind of night, where after the first few times he wakes up you just don't expect to get any solid sleep. But even so, when he wakes up, you still get mad. It's all the lack of sleep that wears the patience down.
I put him down with no problems ( that should've been my first sign) at 6:44 pm. He woke up after that at:
7:15
9:44
Midnight
2:00 ( and was awake until he pooped at around 3)
4:30
and then for good around 6:15
Needless to say, Keith and I are dog tired, and poor Keith has to deal with the insurance adjusters today. One day we will look back at this time and wonder how we functioned in the real world with so little sleep.
Not one to be a total Debby Downer, accompanying this post is a picture of the happy little guy this morning. This picture was taken via Instagram ( the iPhone app with cool filters that make the pictures look older than they are. )

Fun with hats

I have to admit that we are a hat wearing family, especially in the winter time. The hat Cole is wearing in both pictures is from Keith's mom. It's an LL bean hat and is the cutest little thing ever. To the right is a picture of Cole and I just before we left for work/day care Wednesday. Keith was working an all day gala in the city and needed to get to Hyde Park early, so I took Cole to day care. This was us just before we left.
To the left is an iPhone pic Keith took of he and Cole another morning this week He sent it to me via email and totally made my morning.

His eating tools

We went to Waddle and Swaddle in Rhinebeck about a month ago (time goes by so fast I can't even remember exactly when) and got these awesome new silicone bowls for Cole's feeding time. They're called Kinderville LIttle Bites. And Cole loves them so much he wants to chew on them after every meal. Four come in a pack of brightly colored bowls. We sent one to day care and kept the other three at home. Here's a picture of Cole munching on it after dinner.

We are also a fan of the set of spoons we bought several months ago. (The spoons are in both pictures) They are Tommee Tippee Explora Feeding spoons and have a soft silicone like handle that Cole often teethes on. We were worried about him chewing on the metal Gerber Graduates spoons. I was concerned the metal could damage his growing teeth. So we got these instead and have been using them ever since.
